Day 5: Plymouths Thanksgiving Parade
Day 5: Plymouths Thanksgiving Parade
As many know, the first ever Thanksgiving dinner was held in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1621. Everybody also knows about the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade held in the heart of New York City. What many do not know is that Plymouth itself has their own Thanksgiving parade. They call it “America’s Hometown Thanksgiving Parade”. They also say that it is “America’s only historically accurate thanksgiving parade” according to See Plymouth. It actually is not held on Thanksgiving day and is instead always held on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Meaning that this year it is as I am writing this article today November 23rd. This is due to wanting to avoid competition from bigger parades like Macys. Having it not on Thanksgiving also allows them to focus simply on the historical side of Thanksgiving, which is what the intent of the parade is. The main difference between this parade and ones like Macys is the commercial aspect is out of the picture and the goal of authenticity seems to make this hometown parade that takes place in the heart of New England truly special.
